Happy Mother’s Day Downwinder

Mother’s day is a day to celebrate, you guessed it, the WIND!!! That’s what Trey and some of our other riders did by riding and documenting (thanks Trey) their downwinder in the Great South Bay of Long Island, NY.  Trey was nice enough to take some time and let NYKA.org to share his story as well as some of the pics from his kite’s camrig.

More pics to follow at the end of the post.

Kiteboarder (sort of) Of The Week: Photographer Dan Falvo

A few weeks ago I met Dan Falvo.  I was kiteboarding at Sandy Hook, NJ.  There were about 10 kites in the air, conditions were light but it was a great early season session, one of the first without a gloves and without the hood.  Dan was taking pics of all the kiters from shore with his camera on a tripod.  I figured he should be featured as a kiteboarder of the week considering that fact that he tries to bring attention to our sport with his photography. Check out some of Dan’s pics at the end of the interview.

What is your name?
Daniel P Falvo

What is your favorite camera for shooting?
Anything NIKON – currently the D90

iKiteSurf Sensors on the Wind Readings Page

joneswindboxWe have added Live iKiteSurf wind sensors.  You can see that page by going to “Wind & Cams -> Live Wind Readings” in the menu under the big picture or clicking here.  Out of respect for iKiteSurf and the service they provide, we will only have 4 readings.  There are quite a few sensors in our area.  In order to help find the most relevant sensors there is a poll.  The poll will be open until mid-October.

Follow the jump to vote.

NYKA T-Shirts

NYKA-t-shirt thumbA fellow kiter, Peter, had some really cool t-shirts made. He took the hit and also had a NYKA logo made up. Please support NYKA.org and purchase a shirt.  The first batch just goes to make up the time he spent. A t-shirt is just $20 with local shipping included.  Later batches will be a few dollars more expensive but that will go to NYKA, to help cover hosting and legal fees (if any).

Meeting with NYS Parks Department Scheduled

logo_nys_parksA meeting with Mr. Foley from the NY State Parks has been scheduled.  The meeting is set for July 8, 2009 at 1pm.  Our very own David Pereira and another member of the NYC Kiteboarding Yahoo Group will be attending the meeting.  The meeting will serve as a opportunity for both Dave and Mr. Foley to express and understand each other’s concerns and ideas.  Ideally we will walk away with a clear understanding of the root issue so that we can do in depth research into a solution.

Learning to Forcast the Waves

surfsup

Kiteboarding in the waves is becoming increasingly popular.  Legends like Ben Wilson have been pioneering this discipline of kiteboarding for the past several years.  Every year, a handful of big name surfers cross over to surfing with a kite.

That raises the point about the importance of wave and surf forecasts.  Without wind we cannot ride at all.  But without an accurate wave forecast, the surfing aspect of kitesurfing cannot happen.
